A place for friends to meet... with reflections on politics, history, art, music, books, morals, manners, and matters of faith.
A blog by Elena Maria Vidal.
"She was not a guilty woman, neither was she a saint; she was an upright, charming woman, a little frivolous, somewhat impulsive, but always pure; she was a queen, at times ardent in her fancies for her favourites and thoughtless in her policy, but proud and full of energy; a thorough woman in her winsome ways and tenderness of heart, until she became a martyr."
"We have followed the history of Marie Antoinette with the greatest diligence and scrupulosity. We have lived in those times. We have talked with some of her friends and some of her enemies; we have read, certainly not all, but hundreds of the libels written against her; and we have, in short, examined her life with– if we may be allowed to say so of ourselves– something of the accuracy of contemporaries, the diligence of inquirers, and the impartiality of historians, all combined; and we feel it our duty to declare, in as a solemn a manner as literature admits of, our well-matured opinion that every reproach against the morals of the queen was a gross calumny– that she was, as we have said, one of the purest of human beings."
"It is now sixteen or seventeen years since I saw the queen of France, then dauphiness, at Versailles; and surely there never lighted on this orb, which she hardly seemed to touch, a more delightful vision. I saw her just above the horizon, decorating and cheering the elevated sphere she had just begun to move in, glittering like a morning star full of life and splendor and joy. Oh, what a revolution....Little did I dream that I should have lived to see such disasters fall upon her, in a nation of gallant men, in a nation of men of honor and of cavaliers! I thought ten thousand swords must have leaped from their scabbards, to avenge even a look which threatened her with insult. But the age of chivalry is gone; that of sophisters, economists, and calculators has succeeded...."
~Edmund Burke, October 1790
A Note on Reviews
Unless otherwise noted, any books I review on this blog I have either purchased or borrowed from the library, and I do not receive any compensation (monetary or in-kind) for the reviews.
My cousin's husband Gil is going to be alright. The bullet did not penetrate the skull. They are removing the bullet fragments but otherwise he will be able to go home tomorrow. But so many others are dead or terribly injured. This is the worst shooting in US history.

Praise the Lord for Gil's 'small' injury. May he heal quickly and completely.
This evil act is so tragic - may Mary hold her children and keep them close. Lord Jesus - help those who are wounded. Be near those who are scared. Comfort those who lost loved ones today. Welcome home those who perished. We praise you for those who were spared.
Only now I am checking your site Elena...I saw the news last night (late) and I could not believe that it is happening again. I am happy that your relative is fine. Thanks be to God.
Thanks to you all! Gil is a wonderful, godly young man and the father of a beautiful baby boy. His wife, my Cousin, is one of the sweetest, loveliest women in the world. They are a precious little family and I am so glad they have not been parted from each other.
Maybe Christians better start praying more and speaking out more against this awful filth that permeates our children's days and nights. All of these horrific incidents have been brought on my diabolic video games, movies, music and heaven knows what other venues placed there by diabolic forces. We must get rid of this odious onslaught.

Thank God that he is safe. We are praying for all those there.
Thank you, Linda. It is horrible.

Kyrie eleison.
It's just incredible what happened at VA Tech today. May God comfort all those who've been affected.
I am so glad that he will be alright!
