"Polite" Habits Hosts Actually Dislike

You shouldn’t assume that everyone tackles cleanup the same way you do, so before you put your plate in the dishwasher, ask your host how they like to handle it. “I'm one of those pre-rinse, very-particular-about-how-I-arrange-the-dishwasher people, so when friends come over and put used cups or plates in the dishwasher, I always end up taking them back out, which just makes more work,” says McCay. Similarly, if you’re an overnight guest, ask your host if they prefer for you to strip the bed or make it. That way, if they’re planning to wash the sheets, they don’t have to take the extra step of unmaking your perfectly tucked bed. (Read more.)
