The Collapse of the Rule of Law

From Heather MacDonald at City-Journal:
This pandemic of civil violence is more widespread than anything seen during the Black Lives Matter movement of the Obama years, and it will likely have an even deadlier toll on law enforcement officers than the targeted assassinations we saw from 2014 onward. It’s worse this time because the country has absorbed another five years of academically inspired racial victimology. From Ta-Nehisi Coates to the New York Times’s 1619 project, the constant narrative about America’s endemic white supremacy and its deliberate destruction of the “black body” has been thoroughly injected into the political bloodstream.
Facts don’t matter to the academic victimology narrative. Far from destroying the black body, whites are the overwhelming target of interracial violence. Between 2012 and 2015, blacks committed 85.5 percent of all black-white interracial violent victimizations (excluding interracial homicide, which is also disproportionately black-on-white). That works out to 540,360 felonious assaults on whites. Whites committed 14.4 percent of all interracial violent victimization, or 91,470 felonious assaults on blacks. Blacks are less than 13 percent of the national population.
If white mobs were rampaging through black business districts, assaulting passersby and looting stores, we would have heard about it on the national news every night. But the black flash mob phenomenon is grudgingly covered, if at all, and only locally. The national media have been insisting on the theme of the allegedly brutal Minneapolis police department. They said nothing as black-on-white robberies rose in downtown Minneapolis late last year, along with savage assaults on passersby. Why are the Minneapolis police in black neighborhoods? Because that’s where violent crime is happening, including shootings of two-year-olds and lethal beatings of 75-year-olds. Just as during the Obama years, the discussion of the allegedly oppressive police is being conducted in the complete absence of any recognition of street crime and the breakdown of the black family that drives it.
Once the violence began, any effort to “understand” it should have stopped, since that understanding is inevitably exculpatory. The looters are not grieving over the stomach-churning arrest and death of George Floyd; they are having the time of their lives. You don’t protest or mourn a victim by stealing oxycontin, electronics, jewelry, and sneakers. (Read more.)

From The Stream:
In Los Angeles it’s curious where the rioting took place, if you believe the fantasy that the violence has to do George Floyd. Windows were smashed and a kiosk was set ablaze at The Grove. This is a beautiful outdoor shopping and restaurant mecca catering to upscale Angelenos. Right next to CBS Studios and the famed Farmer’s Market, The Grove is where you’re likely to see your favorite celebrity out for dinner and a movie with pals.
Odd place to be protesting police brutality. Perfect place to strike a blow at capitalism and Americana. Militants also tore through the mostly Jewish Fairfax District and looted an Apple Store on trendy Melrose Avenue. The anarchists ripped up Beverly Hills’ famous Rodeo Drive, carrying signs saying “Eat the Rich.”
In New York, two high-powered Brooklyn lawyers were among those arrested for tossing Molotov cocktails at police.  In fact, the daughter of New York City’s progressive and incompetent Mayor Bill deBlasio was busted as part of a group throwing objects at police. The rotten apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
In Washington, D.C., the historic St. John’s church was set on fire. Virtually every president since James Madison has worshipped there at one point. Fortunately, the damage was contained. Even the Lincoln Memorial was vandalized. A protest about the death of a black man at the hands of a white cop is going to desecrate the memorial of the man who freed the slaves? No. But a protest against America and her freedoms? Sure.
Down in Ft. Lauderdale, further proof of coordination and training behind the violence. (Read more.)

Also from The Stream:
After the smoke cleared, Gilbert put word on the street that he wanted to speak with the men who had sparked the conflagration. He heard back that the main instigator would meet him at an old D.C. hotel. When Gilbert arrived, three men were there. The men were hidden behind ski masks and announced themselves as Marxist revolutionaries.

One quoted Che Guevara — “In a revolution, you either win or die.” Another called white people “the Beast” and insisted King was killed because he fought “colonization.” Today these men are probably tenured professors at America’s elite universities. (Read more.)

From the New York Post:
Jarrod Jordan told The Post he has monitored two groups — one of which has a caravan of luxury vehicles including Bentleys and Mercedes — as they prowled the neighborhood and broke into high-end stores amid the chaos of unrest over the police custody death of George Floyd.
“This is a real business. This isn’t angry protesters in any way shape or form,” said Jordan, who is a chief digital officer of a multinational food company.
“This is organized crime happening really, really well.”
He began to walk behind the looters Saturday night, staying up until 3:30 a.m. to figure out what they’re doing and how the operation was organized.
“What I quickly realized is they’re running this four-tier system,” said Jordan, who witnessed looting of stores including Chanel, Prada and Ray Ban. (Read more.)
