Lindsay was prescribed a changing mix of medications over several months, including:
Antidepressants: Zoloft (sertraline), Prozac (fluoxetine), trazodone, amitriptyline, Remeron (mirtazapine)
Benzodiazepines / anxiety / sleep agents: Ativan (lorazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Ambien (zolpidem), Buspar (buspirone)
Antipsychotic / mood stabilizer: Seroquel (quetiapine), Lamictal (lamotrigine)
Over-the-counter: Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
These drugs (especially in combination or when rapidly started, stopped, or dose-adjusted) can produce profound effects on brain chemistry. Benzodiazepines, Seroquel, Ambien, Trazodone, and high doses of certain antidepressants can cause heavy sedation, emotional blunting, dissociation, and a flattened affect often described by patients and clinicians as a “zombie-like” state—reduced emotional responsiveness, slowed thinking, and a sense of detachment from one’s own actions or surroundings.
