The Politics of Envy Always Ends With the Guillotine

New York magazine points out that today’s new socialists are not just incremental welfare statists. Like the bitterly resentful Dan Riffle, they too are working in government to do as he suggests, “burn it down.” Envy is driving this movement — just as it has always driven the envious move to socialism.

Doug Bandow understood in 1994 when he published his Politics of Envy that there would always be a significant portion of the population who will vote for the candidate who promises to take away the most wealth — and sometimes the very freedom — from the greatest number of “undeserving” people. But, the 2016 election of President Donald Trump disproved the theory that promoting the envy of the rich helps to win elections. Rejecting progressive promises to destroy the rich and the powerful, voters awarded President Trump with the presidency because he reassured them that America can again be the “envy” of others if we are willing to change course. President Trump knew that most of us do not envy the rich — we admire them. We may even want to emulate them. He understood that for most of us, our dreams are not to hurt those who have more than we do, we just want to have good jobs that pay us enough to raise our families and feel secure. That was why Trump was elected in 2016 — and it is why he will be re-elected in November. (Read more.)

To those involved in the disorders, the guillotine symbolizes three things.

The guillotine symbolizes the overthrow of an order. The French Revolution did not represent a change of government but the radical overthrow of the legitimate French social and political order. Likewise, the guillotine’s appearance at protests shows how the present disorders seek to overthrow the American order and especially those in the upper classes. The symbol demonstrates that the riots are not racially-oriented but class-driven.  It is drawn from Western history, not African culture.

Thus, the leftist militants do not want to reform or change the system. They want to destroy the entire American order. When they shout “Death to America,” they do so with all the fanaticism of Islamic terrorists that reject the American way of life. When they burn flags and bibles, they understand the significance of these counter-symbols on the American psyche and desire to inflict the greatest amount of pain. (Read more.)

Let us start with the French Revolution. An estimated 40,000 people were killed and 300,000 arrested in this event from the period September 1793-July 1794. Among the dead were Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and Robespierre.

The Bolshevik Revolution, starting in 1917, is a bit harder to quantify. Generally, this time period is considered from 1917 to February 1922. The estimated death toll ranges from 110,000 to 1.3 million. However, the communists were just getting started. For the period following that up, until about 1937, the death toll is estimated between 6.1 million to 8.1 million.

The Nazi Revolution, non-battle deaths are considered to be around 21 million. These are calculated in Rummel’s Democide: Nazi Genocide and Mass Murder.

Mao’s Cultural Revolution (1966-76) death toll estimates reach as high as 20 million.

Today, the United States is in the midst of a cultural revolution, one supported by a major political party – the Democrats. What the final death toll will be, it is too early to say, but there are certainly deaths already. The Democrats have historically demonstrated they are not gracious losers, and as evidence I present exhibit 1: Hillary Clinton. She is followed by a whole cast of characters, from Nancy Pelosi to Chuck Schumer to Barack Obama.

This cultural war has been building for years, starting in the late 1960s when people like Hillary Clinton were in their early 20s. The leaders of this movement have had a “take no prisoners” attitude in theory for a long time and if they succeed in taking control of the federal government in this next election cycle, we’ll likely go from theory to practice.

If you are counting deaths, you may wish to count the abortions they have promulgated in this country with that cultural change of 1973, where you can already put the death toll over 60 million.

Nancy Pelosi is on record as saying, if they become the majority, federal funding of abortions is coming.

See how easy it is to kill millions and make it look nice? The French were novices. Their guillotines were literally in the public square for all to see. Since then, despotic groups have tended to sanitize their heartless deeds by doing them behind closed doors and high walls. (Read more.)
