Almost all children that I have observed have an intense focus and interest on a particular item or theme, even children with autism. I have worked with children with cerebral Palsy and they have shown a strong interest in certain objects or themes, so I am not sure this is an isolated fact only for children who are above average in intelligence. Research zoo life and you will find the same thing to be true.
