It's the color of the moment. According to the Wall Street Journal:
In the Netherlands, orange is the official color of royalty. In India, the flag's saffron band represents courage, and the hue is holy in Hinduism. Orange is also having a moment in the fashion zeitgeist. Mario Batali serves a fizzy pumpkin-colored drink called an "Aperol spritz" at his restaurants. "It's bitter, tangy, and not very strong," said Mr. Batali. "So you can drink a lot of them." Like the flame-haired chef, designers this spring have a particularly high tolerance for orange's sweet-and-sour charms.

To my Grandfather it represented King Billy, the 12th of July and the English repression of Ireland. Just sayin'
Don't worry, Richard, I'll be wearing green on St. Paddy's Day. As for July 12, my Irish Catholic great grandfather used to milk the cows of his Protestant neighbors so they could enjoy their holiday.
Be it associated with royalty as may be, I can't think of a color that is less becoming to most women than orange except for neon green,yellow, or pink. Almost NO woman can wear it, and the only ones who do wear it successfully have dark coloring, like Michelle Obama. And they'd look better in something else.
If you want a color associated with aristocracy and royalty, go for blue. Dark blue makes it on almost everyone, and there's a shade of pale blue that looks good on almost every woman with every type of coloring.
I like blue, especially royal blue.
Dark blue is beautiful on nearly everyone, and there is really quite an array of dark blue shades- the rich royal blues, the warm, sweet indigo that I love, navy blue, and a blue that is almost black. Men love women in shades of blue. It's never really out of style, and it's always in good taste.
I can wear it - reddish hair, freckles, and warm undertones in skin. I love it, and I've been enjoying its drift into home decor as an accent. I like the softer warm shades of orange - blends well with soft browns, and too much bright orange can look garish. It's very cheerful, young, and upbeat. Orange is the color of vitamin C and vitality. It reminds me of summer or Florida in the winter - orange water on my skin, sunsets, and orange sherbet. :)
Wasn't it traditional at one time to wear orange flowers in your hair for weddings(Edwardian?)?
I have been into orange for awhile, too, especially orange lipstick. In the past brides wore orange blossoms at weddings and Roman brides wore orange itself.
