But if he stood so strongly against the tide of Communism, why did he support the virulently secularist and collectivist European Union, whose political model is more like the Soviet Union than the US (in that the real power is wielded by people untouchable by the electorate)?

Mercury, I do not think HIRH supported it as much as he chose to try to influence it. Thank you, tartout, he was in reality the emperor.
