Freud said that the only people who aren't depressed are ones who are not in touch with reality.
It does seem that primitive people who spent more time outdoors doing useful survival tasks, ate more vegetables and less meat and sugar, co-mingled with one another, and had supportive family units were better off in many ways than 'modern man'.
