The dozens of shops standing in the shadow of Schönbrunn Palace are particularly stellar. The summer residence of Habsburg royalty in centuries past, the Rococo-style castle traces its beginnings to 1642 and forms a majestic backdrop to the handcrafted Nativity scenes, decorations, and other items offered here. Situated halfway between Schönbrunn and the legendary Danube River, The Hofburg served as the Habsburgs’ winter quarters. The markets located in this sprawling complex rub shoulders with Roman ruins, the ancient St. Michael’s Church, above, and a former home of Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. (Read more.)
