Days of Fire and Light
Don Marco has a fascinating post about how the suppression of the Octave of Pentecost in 1969 made Pope Paul VI weep. I love the octaves of the great solemnities. Certain feasts are too wonderful to be confined to one day. It takes an octave to absorb the joy and mystery which even in a lifetime we can never fully comprehend.

I would like to respond to every comment but my schedule renders it impossible to do so. Please know that I appreciate those who take the time to share their thoughts.
I'm incredulous that the Holy Father would not have known of the supression of the octave of Pentecost.
ReplyDeleteI guess so many things were being changed and suppressed...it must have been hard to keep track of it all, especially for an older person.
ReplyDeleteNot to compare Pope Paul to Henry VIII but it reminds me a bit of when Henry was dying and he asked for prayers for his soul in Purgatory. "But your Majesty, you have abolished purgatory," was the response. Henry could not keep track of all the changes....
