For some reason, it was important for these ideologues to portray women of the Ancien Regime as the cause of decay. Interestingly, this hatred was further fueled by the killing of Marat by Charlotte Corday. Some historians assert that this incident gave license to the Revolutionaries to execute more women, starting with the queen. It's all of a piece that at her trial she was outrageously accused of having been an impure mother to the Dauphin. To make her death acceptable, she had first to be humiliated. She was a great woman and, if not for political reasons, Louis, herself and Elizabeth should at least be "Blesseds."Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05161106748233222279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534539169157708222.post-57810205012734106492012-10-16T05:54:44.691-04:002012-10-16T05:54:44.691-04:00I had the pleasure and honour to visit Paris and p...I had the pleasure and honour to visit Paris and pay tribute to this amazing Queen Marie Antoinette! It must have been especially troubling to know that her children and Elisabeth were left behind - if the revolution would kill a queen who was no threat, what would they do to "Louis XVII" and the others left in the tower?

I think that Culture&Stuff made an interesting point regarding the queen's treatment versus the king's in their articles about her trial this year... at this point in the Revolution, it was important to treat her "like any other" person at the time. Which meant an open cart, hands-bound, and a trial that was basically for show. No doubt that the years of malice towards her helped them decide on how to treat her, as well.Anna Gibsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16294617189991777940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534539169157708222.post-8234285441124878422010-10-16T14:41:18.984-04:002010-10-16T14:41:18.984-04:00And the beginning of the end of western civilizati...And the beginning of the end of western civilization.....elena maria vidalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17129629173535139807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534539169157708222.post-79268641909309923952010-10-16T14:38:24.863-04:002010-10-16T14:38:24.863-04:00I am sorry you won't be able to understand my ...I am sorry you won't be able to understand my blog, but I'm sure my friends and visitors will love yours.

Many of us are royalistes. Why? It seems paradoxical, M-A was not the one who was the ruler. Of course, I can see why, when the royal couple were still reigning, the wife might be a safer target of attacks than the monarch himself, but even later, when one compares their trials/imprisonments/executions, it seems she was treated with even more cruelty and insult than her husband had been (although the King's treatment was bad enough).
