I would like to respond to every comment but my schedule renders it impossible to do so. Please know that I appreciate those who take the time to share their thoughts.
Most of the ordinary common seaman who went off in those ships never ever saw a book or could even read, although I am sure they heard about sea monsters. Probably made them more eager to go for the adventure of it all. Never know what testosterone encourages a man to do.
