She was crowned and anointed Queen, she was Princess of Wales, and she reigned as Regent when Henry VIII was away. When he took Tournai on the Continent, she was Regent in England at the time Thomas Howard led the army that defeated the Scots at Flodden Field, resulting in the death of Henry's brother-in-law James IV. As her classic biographer Garrett Mattingly notes, "While Henry had been picking roses in Hainault, the laurels had been gathered in the north." Even as she led an army north to fill the gap should Howard fail, she had told Wolsey to tell Henry not to worry about the Scots. Everything was under control! If Mary had been able to reign that successfully, England would have indeed been happy.Stephanie A. Had Katherine been a monarch she, most likely, would have reaigned in the same manner.Julygirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08113475639726723076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534539169157708222.post-63556002557503634342009-08-05T16:18:32.949-04:002009-08-05T16:18:32.949-04:00That sounds interesting, Jackie. It is exciting that so many new works are coming out about Queen Mary and her reign so that we are better able to grasp the depths of her tragedy and the tragedy of the English people.elena maria vidalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17129629173535139807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7534539169157708222.post-3218450549934144922009-08-05T10:30:53.832-04:002009-08-05T10:30:53.832-04:00Thanks for hosting this continuing discussion, Ele...Thanks for hosting this continuing discussion, Elena Maria. I went right to the amazon.com link in this post and ordered the book. It looks like this will be a late summer/fall dedicated to the study of that reign! The Mary Tudor: Renaissance Queen blogger also mentions the work David Loades has done in the study of Mary Tudor. His most recent biography, "Mary Tudor: The Tragical History of the First Queen of England" might be necessary also.Stephanie A.
