Wow! Fascinating. That account certainly holds one's attention. The various personalities sound like players in a Soap Opera. Unreal. As they say, 'stranger than fiction'.

I haven't read this book yet, but I'm very leery about the reviewer's "Bayreuth chorus girl" allegation. That charge crops up now and then, but has been pretty comprehensively rebutted, as far as I can tell, by John W. Barker in his own recent volume on Wagner's Venetian years. Seems that, just this once, Wagner was innocent of philandering. Well, I suppose even Tiger Woods had the occasional off-day.
