The Greatness of Chopin

What was the secret of Chopin's success? (via LRC)
Chopin came to adulthood just when being on the margins of Europe was becoming an advantage. Enlightenment rationality had given way to a fascination with the "spirit of place" and the authentic voice of the "folk". So coming from Spain or Bohemia or Poland made you automatically interesting. Also, Poland had a special claim at attention: its beleagurement to hostile powers meant that it could be treated in art like the tragic, abused heroine of a romantic opera.
