The Old Maids of the Great War

World War I killed a generation of young men, leaving a generation of young women without spouses. (Via LRC)

World War I deprived Britain of three-quarters-of-a-million soldiers, leaving as many more incapacitated.

In 1919 a generation of women who unquestioningly believed marriage to be their birthright discovered there were simply not enough men to go around.

Most likely the same thing could be true in the aftermath of WWII

Elena, I am divorced and as you know I live in Germany...believe me there is no shortage of men to meet but there is a shortage of men who want actually to get married. Many want only a "relationship" for an indefinite number of years...because they are not "ready" (and they will never be "ready") to get married. The divorce rates are soaring...Here one must be prepared to live as single for the rest of his or her life. Extreme secularism as everybody knows does not encourage families...

Paula, you echoed my thought exactly. There are many good people who are having so much trouble finding a spouse because of the secularism.

Reading that article almost made me cry. I was thinking of my students, who make up half the graduating class, and imagining how they would react if they were told that only one in ten of them would ever marry. :(

Cordelia thank you. After my conversion I found that God is pouring generously His grace on those willing to carry the singlehood with dignity. As I said on my blog, the only viable solution is accepting the cross of singlehood, living chastely and seeking God´s will.
